Mental Health Matters

One in every four people suffer from a mental health issue. Mixed anxiety & depression is the most common mental disorder in Britain, with 7.8% of people meeting criteria for diagnosis. It really does make it all the more baffling that we are still living in a society that chooses to treat mental health as a taboo subject bound in misconceptions. 

"There are people that have it a lot worse off than you, at least you have your health"

"Cheer up, it might never happen"

"It's all in your head, just be more positive!"

Mental health problems (e.g. depression & anxiety) are reported to be the primary drivers of disability worldwide, causing over 40 million years of disability in 20 to 29-year-old's. Studies show that mental health problems are caused by chemical and electrical imbalances in the brain, meaning the brain of a person suffering with depression does not physically have the capacity to dwell on positive thoughts. 

Ask yourself this: would you tell someone who is paralysed from the waist down to think more positively and they'll regain the use of their legs? 

I know that every single person is different, we are all fighting our own battles, but from my own experience of receiving the above ignorant comments on more than a few occasions, I can honestly say it's become a hell of a lot easier to just not say anything at all - how terrible is that? How awful is it that mental health has such a stigma that people choose to suffer in silence to avoid mockery or endure the pain of not being taken seriously? 

The thing is, we're stuck in a vicious circle: if we never talk about it, how can we expect people to understand? And if people don't understand, how can we expect them to know not tell us to 'pull our socks up' or 'look on the bright side'. 

So, in recognition of World Mental Health Awareness Day, I thought it would be interesting to find out what people wish others knew about Mental Health...

  1. Fab post, I adore seeing these kind of posts because the stigma around MH is something that really needs addressing. It's the comments that you mentioned 'cheer up' and 'its just in your head' that really, really wind me up. Some people are so ignorant! But with posts like this, I think we are slowly getting there! Great post, thank you so much for raising awareness! 💖💖

  2. I love this post, and it's so right. It's like people choose to shy away from the subject and pretend it doesn't exist. It's a fact that if something isn't done quick, the next adult generation will just crumble because they'll have a lot of mental health issues (which leads to no workforce and society crumbles etc). I also recently did a blog post a couple months back about something like this titled 'mental health stigma' here if you fancy giving that a read. I must admit, I did go off on a bit of a rant, but you get the gist!! Great post lovely- I totally agree! X
